COMING SOON:
Federico Garcia Lorca's most famous plays are known as the "earth trilogy"
or "rural trilogy", Bodas de Sangre (1933,
Blood Wedding), Yerma (1934)
and
Le Casa de Bernarda Alba (1936, The House of Bernarda Alba).
Shortly after he finished the last of the trilogy, he was arrested by
nationalists who supported General Francisco Franco and executed without
a trial. Although his work was not overtly political, Garcia Lorca had incurred
the wrath of the fascist Escuadra Negra ("Black Squadron") because of his
leftist leanings and, apparently, his homosexuality. Garcia Lorca was buried
in a mass grave, believed to be near the village of Barranco de Viznar, in
Granada, and his works remained officially banned in Spain until 1971.

Blood Wedding is a story of love turned tragic because of traditional,
oppressive social structures and family rivalry. Its primary theme is that a
culture where marriage is based on social obligations instead of personal
choice destroys worthy individuals whose human drives cannot withstand
the brutality of the strict social impositions. It is a highly moving and
beautifully written work.

Yerma tells the tale of a virtuous, worthy woman oppressed by traditional
society. Though forced to be married to a man she doesn't love, Yerma
resigns herself to living a socially-acceptable "upright" life, relegating all her
passion and emotional desires into expected motherhood. When the years
pass and she does not become pregnant, she becomes increasingly
dissolute. She is isolated because of her inability to bear a child and tries
everything to become fertile. The tragic and unexpected ending is a
powerful commentary on suffering in a traditional culture.

The House of Bernarda Alba is a play about brutal repression, sexual
jealousy, maternal control and finally death, in which a tyrant widow locks
her daughters away from the outside world.

PTE is proud to bring you these three plays in a series.
